An articular or periarticular fracture happens when a bone breaks inside or around a joint. These injuries often damage cartilage at the ends of bones (articular cartilage) and other joint tissues, requiring special care.
A periarticular fracture affects the bones that make up the joints throughout the body. The most common joint fractures occur in the legs such as the tibia (shin bone), distal femur (thigh bone) and ankle or in the arms such as the elbow or wrist. Treatment includes immobilising the bone with a plaster cast, or surgically inserting metal rods or plates to hold the bone pieces together. Some complicated fractures may need surgery and surgical traction.
